[label-retaining cell]
This term pertains to cells that have been treated in vivo or in vitro with 3H-thymidine or 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine and retain this label for long periods of time. The label as such can be taken as a simple indicator of the proliferative history of a cell. Quiescent cells that do not proliferate retain the label, and this may be indicative of these cells having characteristics of stem cells (Braun and Watt, 2004; Terskikh et al, 2012), or cancer stem cells (Schillert et al, 2013). Long-term label retaining cells divide actively during tissue development and remain quiescent at homeostasis. These two properties have been attributed to adult stem cells.
Retention of label can be used to localize such cells
