This protein is one of the major components of the nuclear lamina, a fibrous structure underlining the nuclear envelope and connected to the envelope by interactions with specific integral membrane receptors. It is believed to be important for nuclear envelope integrity and the organization of interphase chromatin.
It is a member of a protein family, the lamins, that are highly conserved in evolution (Krohne and Benavente, 1986). Human lamin A and lamin C are identical for the first 566 amino acids and differ only in their carboxytermini (McKeon et al, 1986; Fisher et al, 1986) and arise by alternative splicing of the same gene (Lin and Worman, 1993).
