[light cell]
These cells, known also as type 2 taste bud cells or type 2 gustatory cells (see also: taste bud cells), are found in taste buds (Azzali, 1997; Pumplin et al, 1997; Northcutt, 2004). These cells are filled with numerous vesicles and smooth-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum and possess a clear-looking cytoplasm. The cells form synapses with sensory nerve cells (Kinnamon et al, 1985, 1988; Royer and Kinnamon, 1988) and probably act as gustatory receptor cells or serve other functions (McPheeters et al, 1994). Tabata et al (2003) have reported that light cells contain alpha-gustducin, a G-protein subunit implicated in responses to sweet- and bitter-tasting substances.
