limbal stem cells

limbal stem cells are a population of stem cells located in the basal epithelium at the corneoscleral limbus (see also: limbal epithelial crypt cells). Following ocular surface injuries, these cells are responsible for the replacement of the stratified corneal epithelium covering the cornea at the front of the eye (Dua and Azuara-Blanco, 2000).

A single suitable molecular marker allowing their identification and differentiation from their early progeny has not yet been found (Chee et al, 2006; Schlötzer-Schrehardt and Kruse, 2005).
