littoral cells

[littoral cell]

A type of flattened cells, referred to also as rod cells, stave cells, or lining cells which line vascular sinuses (wide venous blood spaces) of lymph nodes, bone marrow, spleen, and liver (Crocker and Williams, 1984; Zajicek et al, 1988; Soligo et al, 1991; Rosso et al, 1995). This term pertains to anatomical locations rather than to a particular cell type.

Frequently, the term is used in a broad sense. Often, the term littoral cells refers to non-phagocytic cuboidal endothelial cells that line lymphatic sinuses, and these appear to give rise to an uncommon vascular tumor of the spleen, littoral cell angioma (Bisceglia et al, 1998; Ben-Izhak et al, 2001).
