abbr. MCF (a term with multiple meanings); also: Mcf1 [makes caterpillars floppy 1]. This protein is encoded by a gene of Photorhabdus luminescens, an entomopathogen that lives in a symbiosis with nematodes that invade insects and becomes pathogenic on release from the nematode into the insect blood system. Expression of makes caterpillars floppy is sufficient to allow Escherichia coli both to persist within and kill an insect.
The protein has little similarity to other known protein sequences but carries a BH3 domain and triggers extensive cell death by apoptosis in both insect hemocytes and the midgut epithelium
