mammary serum antigen

abbr. MSA (a term with multiple meanings). This high molecular weight glycoprotein has been obtained from serum of patients with metastatic breast cancer (Stacker et al, 1989), using monoclonal antibody 3E1.2, which detects an antigen present in human milk and in sera, ascites and breast carcinoma tissue of patients with breast cancer. The authors have suggested that MSA has the same core protein as is recognised by antibody DF3. Thus, MSA would be identical with MUC-1 [mucin 1] (CD227).
