[marginal metallophilic macrophage]
abbr. MMMs; also: marginal zone metallophils or marginal metallophils (so named as they are stained easily with ammoniacal silver according to the Weil-Davenport method). This cell type constitutes a special subset of tissue-resident splenic macrophages that form an inner ring between the marginal zone of the spleen and the white pulp (for overview see: Kraal, 1992).
Upon stimulation with lipopolysaccharide, these cells migrate from the splenic marginal sinus into the B-cell lymphoid follicles. Based on the expression of a large variety of pathogen receptor molecules, these specialized macrophages, like marginal zone macrophages
