Megaloblasts are the malignant counterparts of the normal cells of a series of developmental stages leading to the formation of erythrocytes (see: erythropoiesis). They are nucleated cells that are larger than the corresponding normal cells and are characterized by a delayed or incomplete nuclear maturation relative to cytoplasmic development.
