[melano-macrophage, melanomacrophage, melanomacrophages]
also: melanin-macrophages; or melanin-containing macrophages; melanomacrophages, which are found in a number of cold-blooded species (fish, amphibians and most reptiles), are phagocytizing cells with high amounts of pigments including melanin, lipofuscin, and hemosiderin (Agius and Roberts, 2003). Clusters of these cells form so-called melanomacrophage centres, which are predominantly present in the stroma of hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues, i.e., in the kidney and spleen, but may be found also in the liver and in other body parts (for overview see: Wolke, 1992).
