This antimicrobial peptide (GFLSILKKVLPKVMAHMKamide) has been isolated from the venom of the cleptoparasitic bee Melecta albifrons (Cerovsky et al, 2008). The peptide shows antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria and causes degranulation in rat peritoneal mast cells. The peptide has low hemolytic activity. Niederhafner et al (2010) have described structure-function relationships of 23 synthetic melectin analogs.
