This is a general term pertaining to protein domains that mediate the reversible recruitment of proteins, in particular peripheral membrane proteins, to different cellular membranes. Membrane targeting domains play a role in protein-protein and lipid-protein interactions during cell signaling and membrane trafficking (Chow and Stahelin, 2005; Teruel and Meyer, 2000). These protein / lipid interactions are important for protein targeting, signal transduction, lipid transport, lipid biosynthesis, lipid metabolism, and the maintenance of cellular compartments and membranes. Note that there are peripheral proteins also that do not have separate membrane targeting domains and interact with membranes through part of their molecular surface or through an amphipathic secondary structure.
