These cells, obtained from menstrual blood and thought to contribute to endometrial regeneration (Du and Taylor, 2007), represent a population of cells resembling adult stem cells (Meng et al, 2007; Patel et al, 2008; Musina et al, 2008) (see also: Endometrial regenerative cells, which are most likely the same cell type).
There is a minimal risk of karyotypic abnormalities in these cells, and their long-term self-renewal capacity and growth ability appears to be much higher than those of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (Allikson et al, 2011).
