This cysteine-rich antimicrobial peptide has been identified in the hemolymph of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus (Fogaça AC et al, 2004). The 10,204 Da polypeptide (90 amino acids) contains six cysteine residues and shows no sequence similarity to any known molecule. Microplusin is expressed also during ooge nesis and embryoge nesis and may be involved not only in protection of adult female hemocele, but also in protection of the female reproductive tract and embryos (Esteves et al, 2009).
