The concept of mitokines has been proposed by Durieux et al (2011) in studies in Caenorhabditis elegans who defined mitokines as cell-non-autonomous mediators of mitochondrial stress that are secreted and transmit signals to distal, receiving cells. The term is used now to refer to a number of secreted cytokines and peptides released by cells in response to mitochondrial stress, which then act on other cells or tissues. It includes mitochondrial-derived peptides encoded by functional, short open reading frames within the mtDNA (for example: humanin and MOTS-c, small humanin-like peptides
