also: mitotic cell death. These terms pertain to a process where cell death occurs in connection with cell cycle malfunctions that lead to premature or inappropriate entry of cells into mitosis. The process can be initiated by chemical or physical stresses affecting the mitotic process, inducing, for example, DNA damage or defects in cell cycle checkpoints. It is associated frequently with incomplete DNA synthesis, premature chromosome condensation, and the emergence of viable multinucleated cells.
Mitotic catastrophy appears to be the main form of cell death induced by ionizing radiation, including also chemotherapeutic agents, but is triggered also by agents influencing the stability of microtubules.
