[mitral cell]
Mitral cells are the principal neurons in the olfactory bulb that receive and process information obtained from other cells carrying olfactory receptors (Price and Powell, 1970; Dryer and Graziadei, 1994; Scott et al, 1993). Mitral cells, together with tufted cells provide parallel pathways from the main olfactory bulb and non-redundant odor coding (Dhawale et al, 2010).
Several subclasses based on the position of their somata, and two subtypes of mitral cells based on the location of secondary dendrites have been identified (Orona et al, 1984; Panhuber et al, 1985; Yu et al, 1993). Several subclasses of mitral cells based on the rate and temporal patterns of their spontaneous activity and/or firing rates have been identified (Nica et al, 2010; Zibman et al, 2011).
