abbr. MPB. Administration of chemotherapy and/or treatment with hematopoietic growth factors has been shown to cause a marked rise in the number of hematopoietic progenitor cells in the peripheral blood (as measured by the presence of cells expressing the marker CD34 or as measured in a colony formation assay as colony-forming units). This is being referred to as mobilization. Accordingly, mobilized peripheral blood is used to enrich for these cell types (Gazitt et al, 2001). Mice have been used as a convenient small animal model of hematopoietic stem cell and progenitor cell mobilization and transplantation (Herbert et al, 2008).
