This term has been proposed for a cell type (LL-37-differentiated monocytes) that develops from monocytes treated with the cathelicidin LL-37 (Zhang and Shively, 2010). monoosteophils are large adherent cells that are distinct from conventional monocyte-derived osteoclasts, macrophages, and dendritic cells. This cell type does not express markers of the mesenchymal stem cells lineage, distinguishing them from the conventional precursors of osteoblasts.
