morphogenetic apoptosis
this term has been used to describe programmed cell death in Drosophila melanogaster that is induced by discontinuities in a morphogen signal gradient. It is employed to remove developmentally abnormal cells (Adachi-Yamada and O'Connor, 2002; Takemura and Adachi-Yamada, 2011).
The term has been used also simply to refer to the removal of excessive cells, for example the formation of individual digits during in the developing limb, which necessitates the death of cells in the interdigital tissues (for overview see: Hernández-Martínez and Covarrubias, 2011).
