Multiple myeloma is a B-cell tumor characterized by increased numbers of malignant plasma cells, the terminal differentiation of antibody-producing B-cells (Shapiro-Shelef and Calame, 2004).
Clonal malignant plasma cells in multiple myeloma accumulate in the bone marrow (Vande Broek et al, 2008), but small numbers of these cells are present also in the peripheral blood circulation. Circulating cells do not depend on interactions with the bone marrow for growth and survival and are subject to a number of autocrine growth control mechanisms.
