natural suppressor cells

[natural suppressor cell]

abbr. NS cells. Natural suppressor cells constitute a population of antigen-nonspecific, MHC-independent immunoregulatory immune cells identified originally by their ability to suppress various immune responses in a nonspecific and unprimed manner (Strober, 1984; Maier et al, 1987) and the absence of lineage-specific cell surface markers (see also: null cells).

These cells have been found at sites of active hematopoiesis such as bone marrow (Mortari et al, 1986), neonatal spleen (Rodriguez et al, 1979; Jadus and Parkman, 1986), and the spleen of mice after total lymphoid irradiation (Weigensberg et al, 1984; May et al, 1983). Natural suppressor cell activity has been shown to be enriched in the fraction of hematopoietic progenitor cells ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
