These cells, called also NeoHep cells, are obtained from terminally differentiated peripheral blood monocytes cultured under conditions that promote hepatocyte-like differentiation (treatment with M-CSF and IL3, among other things). The cells are being referred to also as monocyte-derived hepatocyte-like cells.
Neohepatocytes closely resemble primary human hepatocytes with respect to morphology, expression of hepatocyte markers, and specific metabolic functions. After transplantation into the liver of severe combined immunodeficiency disease / nonobese diabetic mice
