[Neuropeptide-like protein 31] This infection-inducible Caenorhabditis elegans protein (Couillault et al, 2004) is a member of a much larger family of infection-induced proteins (Nathoo et al, 2001). nlp-31 is thought to be involved in innate immunity and has been shown to act as an antimicrobial peptide against fungi (Drechmeria coniospora, Neurospora crassa, Aspergillus fumigatus), Gram-positive Micrococcus luteus, and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (Couillault et al, 2004). nlp-31 may have activities also as a neuropeptide, the precursor protein being processed into at least five amidated peptides QWGYGGYamide, GYGGYGGYamide, GYGGYamide,
