Nucleolin is a major nucleolar acidic phosphoprotein of exponentially growing eukaryotic cells that is associated with intranucleolar chromatin and pre-ribosomal particles and is thought to play a role in pre-rRNA transcription by RNA polymerase 1, ribosome maturation and assembly, and transcriptional elongation. Nucleolin has been shown to induce chromatin decondensation by binding to histone H1 (Srivastava et al, 1989). The protein has been identified independently as C23. The genomic structure of the nucleolin gene has been described by Srivastava et al (1990). Nicoloso et al (1994) have demonstrated that intron 11 of the nucleolin gene in humans and rodents encodes a small nucleolar RNA (U20). Rebane and Metspalu (1999) have identified
