These cells are found in the liver after extensive tissue injury and appear to constitute a kind of facultative hepatic stem cell or commited progenitor cell type that can differentiate into hepatocytes and cholangiocytes (Lowes et al, 2003). These cells therefore are bipotential transit-amplifying cells (Alison et al, 2004). See also: hepatoblasts, facultative stem cells.

Oval cells, which accumulate in response to various disease states and toxin-induced injuries within the liver parenchyma (Farber, 1956; Popper et al, 1957), are also being referred to as atypical ductal cells.
