also: ovarian surface epithelium stem cells. This cell type has been described by Virant-Klun et al (2009, 2008). The cells are very small and round and may represent a population of so-called small stem cells, probably a subpopulation of VSEL-SC [very small embryonic-like stem cells]. These cells, obtained from ovarian surface epithelium, express embryonic stem cell markers such as SSEA-4, OCT4, NANOG, SOX2, and c-kit, proliferate in vitro, and can form embryoid body-like structures, oocyte-like, and blastocyst-like structures.
