[peptide leucine arginine; the name reflects the N- and C-terminal residues] pLR (LVRGCWTKSYPPKPCFVR) is a disulfide bridged peptide isolated from the skin extract of the Northern Leopard frog(Rana pipiens) by virtue of its ability to cause histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells (Salmon et al, 2001). pLR is not hemolytic for erythrocytes. It inhibits the early development of granulocyte and macrophage colonies from bone marrow stem cells but does not induce cell death by apoptosis of the end stage granulocytes, i.e., mature neutrophils.
