This peptide (RWKIFKKIEKVGRNVRDGIIKAGPAVAVVGQAATVVKamide) shows a significant degree of identity with other lepidopteran cecropins. The gene has been cloned from the swallowtail butterfly, Papilio xuthus (Kim et al, 2010). Transcripts are detected at significant levels after injection with bacterial lipopolysaccharides. Papiliocin shows a broad spectrum of activity against fungi, Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria. It shows no hemolytic activity against human red blood cells.
