[peripheral perisynaptic glial cells]
This distinct subpopulation of glial cells has been identified in Drosophila melanogaster. The cells reside in the periphery and interact specifically with fine motor axon branches forming neuromuscular synapses, contributing to tripartite neuromuscular synapses of the adult. Peripheral perisynaptic glia resemble Perisynaptic Schwann Cells at neuromuscular synapses in vertebrates, but whereas Perisynaptic Schwann Cells contribute to cholinergic neuromuscular synapses peripheral perisynaptic glia contribute to glutamatergic neuromuscular synapses.
