[peripolar, peripolar cell]
These cells are distinctive epithelial cell type found originally in the kidney glomeruli of sheep and subsequently also in many other species (Gardiner et al, 1991). Peripolar cells are located at the junction between the podocytes of the glomerular capillaries and the epithelial lining of Bowmann's capsule. The cells may be granulated or not granulated (Downie et al, 1992).
Some authors have considered these cells to be a part of the juxtaglomerular apparatus, whereas others do not support this view (Gibson et al, 1994).
