symbol: psh. This Drosophila melanogaster serine protease, encoded by gene CG6367, has been identified by Ligoxygakis et al (2002). The protease plays a role in innate immunity. Mutations in the persephone gene block induction of the Toll receptor pathway by fungi and resistance to this type of infection. The serpin Necrotic protein has been shown to act as the physiological inhibitor of Persephone in vivo (Robertson et al, 2003).
