abbr. P cells (a term with multiple meanings). a histamine producing and storing cell type with features of mast cells (Schrader et al, 1981). These cells are generated in murine long-term bone marrow cultures from progenitor cells, but not from T-cells, that also give rise to other hematopoietic cells. The cells are stimulated by a T-cell derived factor described as P cell stimulating activity (PCSA) or P cell stimulating factor (PSF), which is identical with IL3.
