Pinealocytes, called also pineocytes, are the main constituents of the parenchyme of the pineal gland (pineal body, epiphysis cerebri). The term type 1 pinealocytes pertains to a cell type that predominates at birth. These cells express S100 and do not express neuron-specific enolase. The term type 2 pinealocytes pertains to cell that express neuron-specific enolase. These cells express neither S100 nor melatonin. These cells outnumber type 1 cells by 1 year of age.
