[pioneer neuron]
Called also: pioneer cells. This term is an operational definition used to define neurons that send out axons guiding the growth of follower axons and thus help to establish the first efferent projections during the development of the embryonic cortex, guiding cells to their appropriate target layers (Harrison, 1910; Bate, 1976; Meyer et al, 1998, 1999). These cells usually constitute a transient cell population. The role which these pioneers serve in establishing a nerve route appears to be their only function. These neurons are eliminated by programmed cell death and are not present in the adult (Kutsch and Bentley, 1987).
