Plasticins (also referred to as DRPs [dermaseptin-related peptides]) are skin-derived host defense peptides of South American hylid frogs (Phyllomedusa bicolor, Pachymedusa dacnicolor, Agalychnis annae, and Agalychnis callidryas). These peptides have a length of 23-29 amino acids and are related to dermaseptins. They are rich in Gly and Leu residues arranged in regular 5-mer motifs GXXXG, have very similar amino acid sequences, hydrophobicities, and amphipathicities but differ markedly in their net charge, conformational plasticity, and activity spectra (El Amri et al, 2006; El Amri and Nicolas, 2007; Bruston et al, 2007). They have the ability to bind to and disrupt the membranes of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
