[polarized cell, polarized, polarization]
The term cell polarization does not pertain to a specific cell type but essentially refers to asymmetry in the organization or development of cells. Usually the term refers to an identifiable spatial asymmetry that allows the cellular plasma membrane to be divided into discrete domains. This asymmetry is fundamental to the structure and function of most eukaryotic cells. Cell polarization plays a pivotal role in many cellular processes including cell division and differentiation, directional movement, or the ability of cells to carry out vectorial transport of molecules (Vicente-Manzanares and Sanchez-Madrid, 2000; Arkowitz and Iglesias, 2008; Burgess, 2008).
