[pore-induced intracellular trap]
abbr. PITs. These structures have been observed by Jorgensen et al (2016) in macrophages undergoing lytic cell death such as pyroptosis. Pore-induced intracellular traps are conceptually parallel to neutrophil extracellular traps and trap viable intracellular bacteria within the cellular debris. Pore-induced intracellular traps coordinates innate immune responses via complement and scavenger receptors to drive recruitment of, and efferocytosis by, neutrophils, killing the entrapped micro-organisms. The existence of this mechanism also suggests that bona fide intracellular bacterial pathogens, such as Salmonella typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes, must prevent or delay
