These peptides, which are conserved among vertebrate species, are derived by proteolytic cleavage of the carboxyterminal region E of the propeptide precursor of IGF-1. They display activites not shown by the parent mature IGF-1. Recombinant forms of various peptides derived from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) have been found to be mitogenic for several nontransformed mammalian cell lines, including NIH 3T3 cells (Tian et al, 1999).
