abbr. PCP. This enzyme (EC3.4.24.19) is essential for the processing of procollagens to fibrillar collagens. Procollagen C-proteinase cleaves the COOH-propeptides of procollagens I, II, and III to yield the major fibrous components of vertebrate extracellular matrix. Li et al (1996) and Kessler et al (1996) have demonstrated that the enzyme is identical with one of the bone morphogenetic proteins, BMP1.
