This collective term is used sometimes for cell types that are characterised by particularly high-level secretory protein synthesis and the associated highly evolved mechanisms needed to properly fold, process, and secrete proteins. Professional secretory cells store their secretory products in specialized secretory granules, the contents of which are released upon cell activation. Some secretory cells store their secretory proteins in a dual-function organelle with degradative and secretory functions, called a secretory lysosome (For overview see also: Blott and Griffiths, 2002; Wu and Kaufman, 2005; Molinari and Sitia, 2006).
