pudgy

gene symbol: pu. Kusumi et al (1998) have reported that mice homozygous for the Pudgy (pu) mutation show patterning defects at the earliest stages of somitogenesis, resulting in adult mice with severe vertebral and rib deformities. The pudgy mutation disrupts the proper formation of morphological borders in early somite formation and of rostral-caudal compartment boundaries within somites. They have shown that this phenotype is caused by a mutation in the delta-like-3 gene (Dll3).

The pudgy mutation has different effects on the expression of cycling and stage-specific genes. These effects on the dynamic expression of somite genes suggests a more complex situation than a single oscillatory mechanism in somitogenesis.
