pygmy

The pygmy phenotype, gene symbol pg/pg, has been identified in the house mouse as a spontaneous mutation by King (1950). The homozygous state is characterized by a proportionate dwarfism with a size approximately one half that of normal litter mates irrespective of the genetic background for size, the absence of gross skeletal abnormalities, and also the absence of any defects in endocrine gland morphology (King, 1955). This dwarfism is also not due to deficiency in growth hormone (King, 1955). These dwarf animals are sterile because of deficient spermatogenesis (Chieffi et al, 2002).

Zhou X et al (1995) have shown that the pygmy phenotype, which is associated with a drastic reduction of adipose tissue, arises from the inactivation of the HMGA2 [High mobility group AT hook 2 ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
