The term reticuloendothelial cells essentially is a collective term for cells of the immune system and primarily comprises macrophages and monocytes or their tissue-resident forms (e. g., histiocytes). Thus, the broad designation of reticuloendothelial cells may include all phagocytic cells (phagocytes) that deal with the foreign antigens of any kind of foreign organisms invading the host with the exception of circulating leukocytes.
The term reticuloendothelial cells refers to the old designation 'reticuloendothelial system' (abbr. RES) for the sites at which these cells are produced, i.e., the reticular connective tissues of the primary lymphoid organs, and at which they exert their functions (secondary lymphoid organs).
It has been suggested that the old term reticuloendothelial system be replaced by the term 'mononuclear phagocytic system' to reflect the fact that mononuclear phagocytes play the major role in the phagocytosis of foreign material. Another term used is lymphoreticular system (and hence lymphoreticular cells).
