[somatochrome cell]
This term has been used by classical cytologists and essentially refers to the morphology and histological staining behaviour of neurons. The term was suggested by Nissl (1895), who used a specific aniline-based basic stain for revealing neurons and glial cells in brain sections. Somatochrome cells shows staining with the Nissl stain in their nuclei and cell bodies (see also: cytochrome cells, karyochrome). Nissl substance as detected by the Nissl stain is composed primarily of rough endoplasmic reticulum. It is lost after cell injury and in degenerating axons. Cell bodies appear brilliant violet. The amount, form, and distribution of Nissle substance vary in different types of neurons.
