This cell type has been described by Díaz-Carballo et al (2014) as a population of atrypical cells associated with acquired resistance to cytostatic drugs and features of cancer stem cells as demonstrated by the expression of stem cell markers such as SCF, CD44, and CD133.
Morphologically, these cells are characterized by nuclei arranged in a helical pattern around an empty central space and an accumulation of mitochondria around their nuclei. These cells are found among tumor cell lines of different embryonic origins. Their appearance is inducible by etoposide. Such cells already exist in tumors but are more abundant in resistant tumors both in vitro and in vivo. This
