This cysteine-rich protein has been identified in Drosophila melanogaster (gene: CG1921) as a key regulator of the branching process involving the ordered establishment of a network of epithelial tubes constituting the tracheal network. Mutations in this gene cause excessive branching (Hacohen et al, 1998). sprouty acts as an antagonist of fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling responsible apical branching (see also: heartless). This process involves a member of the FGF family, called branchless, which interacts with the breathless FGF receptor (Reich et al, 1999).
