[suppressor macrophage]
This term has been used for macrophages that act as antagonists of immune responses in vitro and also in vivo (for review see: Eisenstein, 1994). It has been shown that NO can mediate host defense (Garcia and Stein, 2006) and immune suppression by macrophages (Mills, 1991). Medot-Pirenne et al (1999) have provided evidence that suppression is an outcome of cell activation of macrophages and not, as has been suggested, due to the existence of distinct subsets of macrophages.
