Zhao et al (1999) have isolated an oligonucleotide (10-16 bases) from the conditioned medium of human urinary bladder carcinoma cells. This oligonucleotide has been identified as a fragment of tRNA. It inhibits the growth of endothelial cells in vitro but does not affect growth of smooth muscle cells, bovine kidney cells, 3T3 fibroblasts, and several cancer cell lines. Ribosomal RNA, total yeast RNA, and single nucleosides from tRNA hydrolysate have no effect.
