[tart cell]
These cells are macrophages or monocytes that contain a phagocytized nucleus with preserved nuclear structures (intact chromatin pattern). They were observed originally in bone marrow and described examples of nucleophagocytosis, i.e., the uptake of entire cell nuclei by phagocytes (Hargraves et al, 1948; Steensma, 1999). It has been suggested that the phagocytized nucleus seen in these cells may actually be an abortive nucleus resulting from a previous incomplete mitotic division of the cell (Steensma et al, 1999).
Tart cells may be confused with LE cells occurring in patients with the collagen disease lupus erythematosus. Chromatin pattern and density differ from incusions found in LE cells.
